Spectacular Fonts AlgarNow that the sun has arrived a must place to visit are the Fonts Algar waterfalls. A fantastic day trip if you are staying in Benidorm, they can be found on the outskirts of the village of Callosa d'En Sarria, aprox 15km outside of the resort. It is a real natural beautyspot and attracts thousands of visitors over the Summer months - both holiday makers and residents. Throughout July and August they are open from 9:00am until 8:00pm.

No 18 bus collecting passengers at FontsYou can get to the waterfalls by car, taking the CV70, which takes around 30 minutes or on public transport, using the Llorente No 18 bus from Benidorm and taking a little over an hour. However, there is only one bus per day so check the timetable for pick up times at each location but it collects from the top of the Avd Mediterraneo at around 10:00am.

Breathtaking waterfallsFrom there it takes around an hour - going through the breathtaking country side ... the journey alone is worthwhile. The bus passes through the villages of La Nucia, Polop and Callosa where you get a true feel of Spanish life, winding its way through the orange and nispero groves that line the hillside.
The bus drops you off at the Fonts del Algar waterfalls and collects you again at 17:10pm giving you an entire day out - and all for only 3.75€ each way... same price for adults and children. It´s amazing how the driver manages to manoeuvre the bus through the narrow streets and tight bends - I´d think twice about it in a car!

Lots of steps to climb at FontsEntrance into the Algar waterfalls is €5 for adults and €2 for children aged between 4-10. Just before you get to the ticket booth (wooden shed) you have the obligatory photo taken by a young lady, who on your departure has it ready in a frame as well as on a key-ring - no pressure to purchase though. You then have the very steep climb up wooden steps to get to the falls - a pair of flat shoes is advisable and/or a strong man to carry the picnic hamper up! If you are not very mobile then it really isn´t advisable as it really is a trk - however, worth well worth the effort.

Restaurant at the Fonts AlgarIf you are on an All Inclusive package at your hotel ask to have a take away lunch box, otherwise there is a restaurant within the Fonts where you can purchase either a full Menu del Dia or just tapas snacks - plus cold drinks and ice-creams. Most visitors take picnics - heaving their cool-boxes up the steps to the top (have a man in tow). Make sure you take towels and swimwear and I would personally recommend some rubber soled swimming shoes, which are readily available at all the Chinese shops in Benidorm for a few euros.

Fonts AlgarThere are plenty of shady areas to relax in but the most fun you'll have is jumping into the freezing cold running water. For those old enough to remember it'll take you back to the 50's when there was no Health & Safety officer telling you that you couldn't jump off a piece of shuttering ply 10 metres into the river! It is so un-commercialized and relaxing but full of people - of all nationalities.

They have lifeguards, attendants and first aiders patrolling to make sure no-one does anything too dangerous, but it's just great to watch everyone deriving such fun and excitement by jumping into a river.

Diving into the ice cold waterFurther up you can dive off the waterfalls - but a word of caution, the freezing water will literally take your breath away. However, when the sun is baking in the middle of a hot July afternoon, its definitely a welcome relief.

The bus journey back is quicker and only takes an hour as it is all downhill! You will go back tired but exhilarated from your day out ... and probably wanting to go back again the following week.
