Lifeguard on duty with jellyfish flag flyingThe continued warm weather in Benidorm has been a bonus for those coming on holiday. Sea temperatures have been hitting 29 degrees, the highest recorded in the last 10 years - so more like getting into a bath rather than a refreshing dip to cool down! But the unusually warm sea temperatures have bought with them a number of unwelcome visitors – jellyfish, or medusas in Spanish!

1st aid hutLast month (August) there were over 700 reported cases of jellyfish stings in only 2 days and red flags were raised on the beaches. They appeared to subside but once again, they are back. Over the weekend more than a hundred people needed treatment from the first aid stations located on the beaches – with most cases reported close to Dove Park on the Poniente side and the top end of Levante closest to the Old Town.

Jellyfish flagBefore heading into the sea ensure that you check the flags – there is a specific one warning of the presence of jellyfish but also pay attention as to the colour of the flag. If the red one is flying do not go in – last month a swimmer was fined 1000€ for ignoring the flag and the requests of the lifeguards to get out of the water. After all, it is them that then have to risk their lives saving those that ignore expert advice!

Cream good fore jellyfish stingsThe First Aid stations are the candy stripped wooden huts with "SOS" on them and currently manned from 9am until 8pm - there is always an ambulance parked nearby for any emergencies which need hospital attention. Last month the Mayor visited the socorristas which patrol the beaches – in total 49 staff are employed to ensure the safety of bathers in Benidorm and last year they assisted nearly 3,500 people. For those that have been stung they recommend a cream "Neosayomol" to relieve the pain, which can be bought over the counter at the farmacia.
