Runners on the Levante beachfrontThe annual San Silvestre race took place in Benidorm this morning – with a wonderful backdrop of the glistening Mediterranean Sea and blue sky. This is the fifth such race, which always takes place on the first Sunday after Christmas. There were plenty of cheering spectators, out taking a morning stroll along the beachfront - many in short sleeves, enjoying the Winter sunshine.

Runners dressed as reindeerThe runners were out in force – more than 600, serious club runners limbering up long before the 11am start and fun runners, spending more time adjusting their Santa outfits and fairy tutus towards the back! One particular group of ladies, dressed as reindeer, complete with red noses and a rope to mimic the reins which was held by "Santa" roused much ammusement.


runners on the Avd mediterraneoThe 6.8km route headed down the Levante promenade then up the Avd Mediterraneo, which was closed to traffic on one side and the same circuit repeated. A police outrider rode in front of the lead runner to ensure the road ahead was clear and managed to lap the last of the "fun runners" - possibly a little demoralizing to think that they had a further 3 plus kilometres to go.

fun runners at san silvestre benidormThe race was won by Juanan Fernandez with a quick time of 21 minutes and 43 seconds - with the runner up hot on his heels, literally, only one second behind! A children´s mini race followed at 12 Noon and over 200 keen youngsters participated. Traditionally a swim takes place but this had to be cancelled at the last minute due to choppy waters.
