buildings seen from the crossThere are ongoing rumblings about All Inclusive hotels and the impact which they have on the local economy. The PSOE party – now the opposition after the May elections have chaired a motion to discuss the proliferation and any action which can be taken about the rise of All Inclusives at the next plenary session. However, they have been criticized by the governing PP party for bringing this issue to the table now – having done nothing during their six years in power!

ai twit new flamingoAccording to HOSBEC – the Hoteliers Association, only 20% of hotels in Benidorm are, or offer an All Inclusive option. However, trade associations, restaurateurs and entertainment venues fear that this trend is increasing and could cause a “serious problem” for the resort. All Inclusives evolved in the Caribbean – where a hotel was built in an isolated area. There were no other bars, restaurants or shops nearby and often it was unsafe to leave the hotel complex, so completely acceptable. However, the phenomenon spread to Europe and is favoured by families who like the idea that once they have arrived they don´t need to spend anymore – and where the problem lies. It is an issue that divides people. I have been to All Inclusives in the Caribbean – many years ago, but would never opt for one in Europe.

buffet at Marconfort I think it is important to support the local economy, be it here in Benidorm or other European resorts. Food and drink is so cheap here that it really cannot be justified – plus the buffet style meals at the hotels are virtually always the same each day. After three days you´re crying out for something a bit different. That’s not to say you cannot find more expensive higher quality here too – but the typical Benidorm visitor is here for a “value for money” holiday. As for the party goers, ie Stag and Hens, they are predominantly after cheap booze, in vast quantities!

sol pelicanos aka solanaEven the fictitious Solana resort from the ITV Benidorm series is an All Inclusive, with everyone waving their coloured wristbands at the bar. The famed catchphrase “If you want to get pissed, show us your wrist” is an example of the AI attitude. Mick Garveys point of view, why go out and spend money when everything is free in the hotel is sadly not uncommon.

What the Opposition proposes about All Inclusives remains unclear – perhaps stop any further opening, but what about those already here? Surely they can´t just turn around and say no more – perhaps tax them at a higher rate? I don´t think it will be a speedy resolution either way, but if you are here then please go out and visit the local bars and restaurants.

first choice logoIt´s a catch 22 situation – people staying at AI don´t go out, bars and restaurants suffer and eventually close and the resort, outside of the hotel becomes a ghost town and people don´t want to go because there is nothing open! Tour operators such as First Choice only offer All Inclusive options now, apparently due to customer demand - people want to ensure that their holiday budget is covered.
