Now somewhat of a yearly tradition (although not an official event), British Fancy Dress day took place today (Thursday 16 November) …. always taking place the day after the end of the official Benidorm fiesta.
An astonishing 40,000 Brits have attended this year according to town hall stats, transforming calle Gerona, which had been closed to traffic into a kaleidoscope of colours and costumes. What sets this event apart is the sheer diversity of costumes on display.
Virtually anything goes – ranging from the sublime to downright outrageous, but in the words of a certain gent “All in the best possible taste”.
The entire area was jam packed, from Morgans Tavern down to Jumping Jacks and down across The Square.
All the bars appeared to be competing for who could blast out the loudest music and many had mobile bars outside. The streets became a runway for an eclectic mix of characters, from historical figures and superheroes to whimsical creatures and pop culture icons.
The float parade added an extra element to the occasion, with spectators cheering and clapping as they passed. It’s been a fabulously sunny day – just perfect. Plenty of police and first aiders standing on the sidelines, watching over the partying from a distance and during the day at least, no sign of any trouble at all.
British Fancy Dress day appears to get even bigger and better as the years pass. DJ Jessie Brooke really got the party mood in full swing from a giant stage at the top of calle Gerona and once you´ve been you really can´t but help wanting to go back again and again.
Next year it will take place on Thursday 14th November... just in case you need to book your holiday from work!
