Yesterday evening a brand new karting track opened in Benidorm – a mere 10 minute walk from the Levante beach! The Mayor Agustin Navarro officially inaugurated the latest leisure facility to come to the resort and thanked the two businessmen who bought it to fruition – Antonio Garay and Ramón Román. After his speech he then went down to the track, donned a safety jacket and helmet and jumped into a kart, where Antonio´s son joined him for a few laps.

Altea, without doubt, has to be one of the most picturesque and visited towns along the entire Costa Blanca coastline. It couldn´t be further apart culturally from Benidorm, yet distance wise so near and most definitely worth a visit. The Old Town is almost like stepping back in time and what many people envisage the “real Spain” to be like. Only a 10 minute drive outside of the bright lights and skyscrapers of Benidorm, you can even hop on the number 10 bus for a mere 1.50€.

Having your passport stolen while away can ruin your entire holiday. As well as the inconvenience of obtaining an emergency travel document from the Consulate in Alicante, which is only valid for that one journey, there is the cost involved – 131€ which is approx 95 pounds sterling dependent on the exchange rate. This is very possibly the actual cost of your return flight as well as a putting a big dent in your spending money while here! Then on your return back to the UK you have to re-apply for a brand new passport, a further 72.50 GBP... so keeps your safe.

The sound of the 60´s will once again come to life at Benidorm Palace for a one night special performance on Sunday 8th March - with not one, but three legends of the era. The Foundations, remembered for their iconic hits such as ´Build me up Buttercup´ and ´Baby, Now that I´ve found you´ will be joined by Dave Berry, fondly remembered for his melodic hit ´The Crying Game´ and Vanity Fare who released ´Early in the Morning´ and ´Hitchin´ A Ride´. Producers of oranges in the Alicante region are leaving their crops unpicked due to high costs exceeding profitability. The province produced 332,000 tonnes annually, representing 53.9 million euros, but the falling prices paid to farmers does not even cover the maintenance throughout the year.

Sadly yet another story has been reported in the UK press of a "heartbroken daughter who must raise 6000 GBP to bring her father´s body back home after a holiday tragedy". This occurred last week in Benidorm when the 50 year old took a break to the popular holiday resort with friends – and did not take out travel insurance. This is the devastating consequence left for the family back home to deal with – putting out an appeal on social media to help with the repatriation costs to fly the body back home. Unfortunately this is not the first, nor I fear the last that we will hear of such tragic incidents. Don´t be tempted to travel without insurance, whatever age you are!

"AICO" – The Independent Association of Dealers in Benidorm and the province have issued a report to warn of the saturation of Sunday markets in Benidorm and the immediate area, which includes the towns of Alfaz, Albir, Callosa, Finestrat, La Nucia, Pollop and Villa Joyosa. The study has calculated that there are 1,854 stalls every Sunday between these towns.

Following the Greek elections at the beginning of this week, the new Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has declared that he will be overhauling the tourism industry, which the country heavily relies upon. In particular, he made specific reference to the All Inclusive holiday resorts, which he claims are ruining the local economy.... sound familiar? Much like Spain – and in particular resorts such as Benidorm, their economy is virtually reliant on the money bought in from tourism. The proliferation of All Inclusive hotels here has been the subject of much debate over the years.

Benidorm Mayor, Agustin Navarro met with the promoter and representatives of the proposed new market along the N332 – a Dutch company "Outlet Market C.B" last Friday morning. The 2,500 sq mt plot, located opposite the ITV vehicle testing station and just before the nightclubs has been cleared and leveled, but the Council have now withdrawn its support for the project after mass opposition from local traders. One of the things which remain unchanged here are the weekly street markets - but how many does one town need?
