Ryaniar are once again on the warpath - this time with the Spanish airport authority, AENA. AENA are insisting that the airline must comply with new rules that state passengers’ rights to carry their duty free purchases in addition to their handluggage. Many a time flying out of Alicante I have witnessed passengers trying to stuff their duty free into their 1 piece of small luggage.
Well it's big - the new duty free shop at Alicante airport ! The check-in desks are easy to locate and then you go through security - which is on the far left hand side. One thing to say is that there are many more x-ray machines and scanners which are far more sensitive; the sunglasses perched on my head set the alarm off! Once you get through the security area you have to go through the "Duty Free" shop to get to the departure gates. Now, be warned .... duty free indeed!
Following years of building and afew million euro's (629 to be precise) the new state of the art Alicante Airport terminal has finally opened. You pass the old terminal 1 building and drive straight on - keeping to the right if you want departures / drop off zone. Unlike the old drop off zone this new terminal has numerous parking bays - but again it is only a drop off zone so don't leave your car for too long unattended.

The ceremony of the "Crema" burning of the fallas at the Rincon de Loix was looked down upon by the lights of Vicentes pubs, Subway and Burger King. As the Bomberos (fire engine) truck approached, the crowds started to swell, in anticipation of the final act. The local police tried to push the crowds back away from the display telling spectators they will get hot and wet but to no availe.

The Fallas are a traditional Valencian celebration in honour of St Joseph. The term "falles" refers to both the celebration and the monuments created during this time. The biggest and best celebrations occur in Valencia, the birthplace but many towns in the Valencian community have there own parties. These photographs show the amazing fallas createdin Valencia last year..... many stood at more than 20 metres in height !

Following the success of the award winning ITV series "Benidorm", the town has become a mecca for those retired Brits in their sunset years heading for Benidorm to let down their blue-rinsed hair in the hundreds of thousands. Endevouring to follow in the footsteps of their on-screen idol Madge, the streets of Benidorm have been turned into a motorway of pensioners on mobility scooters!

If you can't get to Rio to see the Mardi Gras carnival then the Carnival in Benidorm is your next best bet. The traditional carnival celebrates the beginning of Lent and the parade is held on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday, this year being 5th March. The main street leading up to the Town Hall Square were awash with locals and tourists jossling for pole position to see the amazing procession. Last Saturday 26th February Pat and Ted of the Union Jack Bar in Benidorm organized a charity event to support Emaus.Emaus was founded in 1979 in Altea and deals with children that have been taken into care because of the impossible family environment they were living in. At present Emaus runs 8 childrens shelters, occupational workshops and a counselling service. The children's shelters have nearly 80 children living in them.

If you are a regular traveller between Alfas del Pi and Benidorm this good news is for you. Works have started on the construction of the new roundabout on the N322 with a new access road to Alfas. As shown on the picture of the plan, the new roundabout is set away from the existing junction towards Altea. At this roundabout there will be a new road constructed with a bridge over the tram tracks.
Today as announced a chapter of bikers all on Harley Davidsons roared into the parking lot outside the sports centre. They made their presence felt with the reving of the motors. It was all fun. Below is a selection of the participant's bikes. There was also a "Dnipro" motor cycle with side car taking part. This particular model was manufactured in Kyiv during the Second World War by the Germans. It was a prototype of the BMW.
If you are at a loose end on Sunday morning, El Cisne rastro is the place to visit. The market is a bustling place with all nationalities mingling looking for a bargain. The stall holders, some on their personal pitches, others on makeshift tables sell everything, both new and old. Compatible printer inks can be bought for 3€, also antiquated mirrors and chests, a variety of Dutch cheeses - virtually anything!

The special medical centre which opened in the middle of December of last year has already added four more specialists: Endocrine (hormones and glands), Neurology, Allergy and Physiotherapy, to the existing Midwifery and Sexual and Reproductive Health.The centre covers for a population of 79.500 spread over 12 municipalities in the Marina Baixa area.

Today at 12 noon the new Policia Local station was opened by the mayor Vicente Arques Cortes, Encarna LLinares and Leire Pajin Iraola, Minister of Health and Political Social Equality. Local people turned up to view the event and later pass through the building to inspect it's facilities.

Driving down the Avd Mediteraneo this afternoon, I could not help but notice the board outside one of the many bars. As prices for beer in the UK rose last week to over £3 - due to the VAT rise, here in Benidorm they seem to have come down !!!!For those of you that can't see the small board, here is a close up. Yes, it does say 1 euro for a PINT of San Miguel - and that's NOT a Happy Hour special price - its ALL DAY"
