Beer prices are still a fraction of what they are in the UK and you can easily find a pint here for just €1.50! That is one of the main draws to Benidorm and with the recent shocking UK newspaper headlines stating that the price of a pint could soar by 15 per cent by 2023, in London this could mean it would be £9! Truly scandalous and that will certainly entice even more to come over here!

A riot of colour!

Following a 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the traditional Holi colour festival took place at Terra Natura in Benidorm yesterday. Prior to the event, crowds gathered to celebrate Pepita the elephants 50th birthday, with a music and dance display before presenting the star of the day with a basket of fruit and vegetables which she shared with her best friend Kaiso.

Fireworks return

The traditional Castell de l´Olla midnight firework display took place in Altea last night (Saturday, August 13) following a two-year absence due to the pandemic. The event is the biggest firework display in the entire country, attracting tens of thousands to the area and a great and much needed boost to the local economy.

No one does charity and good causes like Benidorm and on Wednesday, the new Busy Bees Benidorm charity calendar was launched by Wayne and Des Bellamy-Wright, founders of the charity, which they set up in 2016 alongside Tad and Paige from the Yorkshire Pride group. The launch took place at the Happy Days bar in the Rincon this afternoon, with the Channel 5 "Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun" film crew in tow, recording for the new series!

Over the last few days, there has been much scaremongering in the UK press that Brits visiting Spain “must prove that they can spend at least €100 per day for the duration of their stay as well as a return flight and proof of accommodation”. Do not be put off booking by reading these alarming sensational headlines - 99% of those arriving at Alicante airport for their holiday to Benidorm will sail through passport control and be on their way on the AP7 motorway into the resort to enjoy all it has to offer.

Scooter clampdown

Local Police in Benidorm in conjunction with the town hall, have embarked on a clampdown over the rental and use of mobility scooters and electric scooters in the town... long overdue according to many! Benidorm was one of the first places in Spain to regulate the hire of mobility scooters following complaints from road users and pedestrians.

Benidorm town hall commemorated Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee by lighting up the 20 meter tall ´Tecnohito´ tower, located at the end of the avenida Meditarraneo with a congratulatory message. It was a wonderful gesture and much appreciated by both British residents and visitors, who were here on holiday over the weekend.

Medieval times in Benidorm

The annual Medieval Market is up and running in Benidorm, located in Parc d´Elx (Dove Park) at the start of Poniente beach and on until this evening – Sunday May 8. There are lots of stalls along the promenade plus randon processions and demonstrations throughout the day. If you are hungry, there´s a delicious bbq with sausages, ribs, spit roast pig and a ginormous paella!

Setting off a little after 6pm from Parque de Elche (Dove Park) in the old town, numerous floats were interspersed with animated dance routines and bands.

British Fancy Dress Day always takes place the day after the end of the official Benidorm fiesta - which closed with a spectacular firework display last night. Calle Gerona was a throng of revellers in an array of outfits showing Benidorm is back in business!

Benidorm is BACK!

It´s been a long slow road but it certainly feels like the resort is getting back to some semblance of normality… albeit sadly with a number of restrictions still in place, namely the 1am to 6am curfew, no dancing and max 6 per table inside or 10 on an outside terrace. This was extended and will remain in place until September 6 but certainty hasn´t appeared to deter everyone as was feared. The neon lights that illuminate calle Gerona and the square have come back to life and live shows are back on in most places.
