  • The coastline is littered with beaches and hidden coves and if you like exploring and getting away from the mainstream, then head to La Olla in Altea - past the main Altea strip and towards Altea Hills. The easiest way is by car, just drive along the N332 and it will take about 15 minutes, unless you choose a Tuesday when the market is on – the number 10 bus only goes as far as Altea centre and it´s quite a walk from there. Alternatively, take the tram to Olla de Altea then walk down towards the sea.

  • In a bid to promote safety and warn holiday makers of dangers on the beach, which includes the peddlers selling their wears, the town hall are putting up signs along the front. They are also planning on printing 2,000 leaflets to hand out but it is unclear where they will be available or who will be handing them out. I can only imagine they will be at the Tourist Information centres and at hotels. Although the sentiment is there, is anyone actually going to read the sign as the writing is so small you really need to get up fairly close.

  • For a change it was not Benidorm getting a slating in the British press this week – instead the shame fell to Magaluf, on the Spanish holiday resort of Majorca. A shocking video went viral on the social media network of a young British girl, who was on an organized bar crawl, performing a sex act on a line of men to win a free drink! The Mayor and local politicians were outraged at the damage it has done to the image of the resort and are mounting a PR campaign to attempt to restore the image and persuade holidaymakers to return.

  • The show stopping picture in today´s Daily Mail “Wish you weren´t here” showing a packed Levante beach makes it sound as if they had just discovered something new. Im actually a little dubious that it´s a current picture, especially as this year’s pedaloes are white and orange and it is a library picture from Getty Images! However, this is nothing new to us who live here – the beaches, in particular Levante are packed like that every Summer.

  • With the season pretty much here now, the beaches are starting to fill up nicely… except yesterday and probably again today, as the grey clouds circle and rain threatens. Although no comfort to holidaymakers, it is a welcome relief to residents, but rest assured that the weather app shows the orange balls will be back by the weekend. The beaches are probably the biggest assets that the resort has to offer, particularly for families – but one thing that is missing from them this year are the floating pontoons and pedalos.

It has even made headlines in the daily papers – but rest assured, sadly this is not an isolated incidence, which only occurs there! The Brits even put the Germans to shame, historically renowned for bagging sunbed at the crack of dawn.

  • Scene every summer on LevanteOne of the main reasons millions choose Benidorm for their holidays is because of the miles of golden sandy beaches - and Benidorm has the added bonus of not one but three; Levante, Poniente which includes Mal Pas and La Cala. They are spotlessly clean and safe, with each stretch patrolled by a lifeguard - obviously in season and also have first aid points, which

  • It’s half term in the UK so the resort is full of families this week… but what to do with them? Naturally the beach is an obvious choice and the brightly coloured pedaloes are already lined up on the waterline along the length of Levante and Poniente beaches. It’s a fun family activity – dads to do the peddling and kids having fun going down the slide! The resort also has 5 theme parks to visit - Aqualandia, Mundomar, Terra Mitica, Terra Natura and Aqua Natura, something for everyone! You can often pick up discount vouchers for these theme parks around the resort, giving you around €5 off the entrance price but there are also combination tickets for Aqualandia, Terra Mitica and Mundo Mar which are part of the same group giving quite a big saving on the ticket booth price – but only valid until the end of June.

  • Benidorm council are undertaking a €400,000 project to resurface a section of the Avd Mediterraneo – the main artery running through the resort, which is scheduled to be finished for the weekend. July see’s a huge influx of holidaymakers into the resort and they are up against the clock to complete the works, so have drafted in extra machinery... at what cost I wonder. Am I the only person wondering why they stared this during the busiest time of the year? Surely logic, which seems to be somewhat lacking at the town hall would have dictated that they should be doing this out of season…. causing minimum disruption to everyone.

  • The mass influx of holidaymakers yesterday bought roads leading into Benidorm to a virtual standstill. The Levante exit on the AP7 motorway saw some drivers waiting up to an hour on the sliproad to pass through the tollbooths.

  • The recent UK press coverage of 81 year old Freda’s ‘dream holiday to Benidorm’ being ruined because “the hotel was full of Spanish holidaymakers” wouldn’t look out of place in a scene from Fawlty Towers! But her remarks get even more absurd when she asks “why can’t the Spanish go somewhere else?” Rather embarrassingly, this story has also appeared in the Spanish papers and you can just imagine their reactions! It is adding fuel to the fire of Spaniards perceptions of Brits just wanting a little Britain in the sun. Choosing the correct side of Benidorm is very important as they differ vastly, as is picking the correct accommodation, as Freda and probably many others quickly realise!

  • The new Mayor is certainly going all out to bring about improvements to the resort. Workmen and diggers have moved in along the Levante promenade and the 20 ramps along the entire length are being replaced with solid metal and concrete structures. The vibrant Levante beach is the most popular with visiting Brits, attracted by the miles of golden sand and safe play areas for children so important to keep in perfect condition.

  • Benidorm has always been a favourite holiday destination and with the Foreign Office directive not to travel to Tunisia in addition to the financial woes in Greece, will probably see many more head this way over the next couple of months. There is much being made in the UK press about Spain now on red alert – most of this is just scaremongering… everyone is on red alert! The UK is on the same terror alert yet you don´t see people fleeing – London is still full of tourists. Wherever you are in the world, you sadly need to be vigilant and sensible – times are changing.
Benidorm is as safe as any other resort – the police are always quick to respond and be aware, they all carry guns. If you ever come across a road check – which is rather common here, the trafico police even have machine guns and aren´t afraid to use them either!
