Yesterday afternoon British Consul Paul Rodwell hosted a meeting at the Melia hotel in Benidorm aimed at those that work in the tourism sector. It was also the launchpad to promote the release of 2 safety videos that have been produced locally and authorized by the Foreign Office to roll out and publicize in the lead up to the busy Summer season.

At the beginning of this year Karen Ravenscroft, otherwise known as Kinky Karen was one of several Brits that was featured on Channel 5's "Benidorm ER" documentary series. The camera crew followed her around whilst she was investigating the cause and treatment for a severe back problem.She was advised by doctors that she needed an operation but Karen decided against it after researching the risks involved.

Have you ever tried to hail a taxi from the roadside and had many empty ones pass by but not stop? If you've ever headed inland from Benidorm, past La Nucia you may have wondered what the silver white meshes are that adorn the mountain-sides. Many of you may have wondered what the semi built concrete skeleton in the middle of the Avd Europa is.....well obviously a building site - it doesn't take a genius to work that one out with SIX cranes sitting idly by! The "project", which actually started back in 2007 is for a colossal 35,000 sq mt Cultural & Conference Centre - which had an initial budget of 40 million euros.

With this weeks live broadcast of Britain's Got Talent semi finals, it reminded me of the very funny Sports Relief BGT which the cast members of our much loved Benidorm series did earlier this year. And on that note, according to "The British Comedy Guide",Tiger Aspects the production company responsible for Benidorm have confirmed that they are indeed working on a 6th series of the ITV sitcom.
Did you know that as a resident Spanish pensioner in Spain you are eligible for cheap holidays throughout the country. The Spanish government heavily subsidises over one million pensioners to go on holiday every year. The programme is called IMERSO (Institute for Senior Social Services) .... Can you imagine the UK government doing that - they barely pay enough pension to cover the basics!
Yesterday saw many of Benidorm's popular entertainers turn out in force to support a fundraising Gala night at the Rober Palce Hotel in Albir.The event was the brainchild of two local ex-pat residents - Rada Haupt and Melanie Howell together with the help of Phil Howell and David Pearce aka Miss Shape of the Rich Bitch Show Bar.
Since the smoking ban was introduced in Spain on 2nd January 2011, many bar owners have complained about the detrimental impact on takings. The anti-smoking laws are one of the strictest in Europe and the introduction was met with mixed reviews. The rules were first introduced in 2006, which outlawed smoking in the workplace but allowed bar and restaurant owners to choose whether or not to allow it.
The Marina Baixa Hospital in Villa Joyosa, on the outskirts of Benidorm, has just won the "Health 2000 award" recognizing it as the best "public hospital" in the Valencian community. There are a total of six in the Province of Alicante - Denia, Villa Joyosa, San Juan, Alicante, Elche and Orihuela.
