"El Torrejó" building where SATE is located
Since its opening in June, figures revealed yesterday show that the SATE office assisted 1280 people up to the end of last year. SATE stands for "El Servicio de Atención al Turista Extranjero" - hence the abbreviation, which roughly translated means the Foreign Tourist Assistance Office. This is where you should go to file a report if you are in the unfortunate situation of being a victim of crime while in the resort.

The office is located on the first floor of the Tourist Information Office, in a building called "El Torrejó", which is right at the end of the Levante beach and on the edge of the Old Town. Many commented that its location would deter people from going, but from the figures quoted it certainly doesn´t look like it!
Out of the total 1280, just over half, 53% (837) were British nationals; 179 were from other European countries; 174 were from non-EU countries and 90 were Spanish. The feedback from those which had used the services of SATE were that they provided an excellent service.

Who´s watching your bag!
The majority of complaints filed were for pick pocketing, with a high percentage of those taking place on the beach when bags had been left unattended while the owners went into the sea or were sunbathing! During the meeting representatives of the City Council suggested that a Summer vigilance campaign needs to be launched ahead of this years busy holiday season to warn tourists of this danger. Personally I am not too sure how you can warn people of their own stupidity and consequences of leaving valuables unattended, but good luck to them! You may also subsequently experience problems if trying to claim on your travel insurance as it can be deemed that you did not take due care and attention with your valuables - so be warned!

Dep Mayor Gema Amor chairing the meeting
The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor and Councillor of Tourism Gema Amor, Security Councillor Jose Marcet (in glasses next to Gema), President of HOSBEC Antonio Mayor and Police Chief Juan Carlos Hernandez together with 2 officers. They all have the same objective -  safeguarding visitors to the resort and helping those that fall victim to criminal activity while here.

The office is open all year round - though initial thinking was for busy holiday periods only but this was quickly scrapped. From Easter till October the office is open on weekdays from 9am until 9pm and at weekends from 10am until 2pm. The rest of the year, which includes now, it is open from 9am until 3pm and there is always an English speaking person on hand to assist.
Please try NOT to have to pay them a visit while you are here...
