Bullring in Benidorm

After many years, the Plaza de Toros in Benidorm will once again host bullfighting starting on Friday 29th March at 17.30pm - Good Friday, always a tradition at Easter in Spain. The contract to run bullfights has been won by a new company, Sinta 2005 SL. Six bulls, from Salamanca and three matadors will open the event: Manuel Diaz, Fandila David and Antonio Teruel. Ticket prices will range from 15 euros up to 70 euros and available from either the box office at the bullring or at the kiosk in the Plaza Triangular - at the top end of the Avd Mediterraneo.

Love it hate hate it - bullfighting is a tradition dating back many centuries - it is part of Spain´s heritage and culture. Bullfighting is big business in Spain, with the top matadores earning salaries akin to top fottballers - except somewhat more dangerous!
Catalonia, whose capital is Barcelona, banned bullfighting in 2011. But there is currently a petition with over 590,000 signatures including that of the current Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy which has been submitted to parliament.

A parliamentary commission will now begin work on a new legislation, giving bullfights protection on cultural grounds and so overturning regional laws.

About 2,000 bullfights are still held every year in Spain, although in recent years it has declined in popularity. Many Spanish, particularly the older generation view bullfighting as an art form. Whatever your views, and I would guess that the majority of Brits are against it being animal lovers, its a very emotive topic and on a par to fox hunting in the UK.
