The first banks of jellyfish were discovered on the beaches of Benidorm this weekend – Pelagia Nocticula, producing nasty burns simply by brushing past one. Four people had to be treated by the first aiders on the beach – the first of the season. Head to the stripy wooden huts if you need any first aid treatment.
Fortunately as the water is still rather cool – 16 degree not many were swimming, but with the influx of Easter holidaymakers that number could rise. The temperatures have been extraordinary – with temperatures hitting 32 degrees in Alicante, not seen at this time of the year since 1988!
By this weekend hotels are expected to be virtually full and tomorrow Terra Mitica Theme Park opens its doors for the start of the holiday season. There are many Easter processions over the next few days, predominantly taking place in the Old Town.
But jellyfish were not the only thing found in the sea this weekend – a 12 metre tree, intact with roots and branches was found drifting just off the shore. The Guardia were called to this must unusual find and had to decide what to do with it – as leaving the tree could cause serious damage to any passing boats.
It was towed to Benidorm Island as it was too dark to navigate to the port and yesterday a boat with three firemen onboard went out to cut the branches off. One of the firefighters was submerged in 1 metre of water for 3 hours sawing… this then enabled the main trunk to be towed back. No-one is quite sure how a giant 12 metre tree managed to find its way into the sea and the picture shown is from the Spanish newspaper.
ps.... the mosquitos have also made an appearance so bring the repellent with you!
