Britain’s most popular dish these days is not traditional roast beef or fish & chips anymore but curry – a reflection of the changing integration of a multi cultural population. However, it is often very difficult to find a good Indian restaurant, especially if you don´t live in a major city – or heavens, even worse if not even in the UK. But Keep calm, Don´t panic – help is at hand by way of “Curry On” – an amazing idea and concept of two sisters, Nilam and Veena.
Both are born in the UK of North India parentage and grew up on mums curry. When the girls flew the nest they´d constantly be ringing mum up to ask how to make a particular dish – a familiar scenario for many mothers! Nilam then moved here, to the Costa Blanca and things got even worse – especially trying to source spices and would ask her sister to bring them over when she came visiting. Veena told me her entire luggage allowance was then taken up with spices and the few pieces of clothing that she managed to get in would have a definite curry fragrance.
Friends would always be asking the pair how they could recreate a particular dish they had tasted and so “Curry On” was born. It is basically a kit which serves 4 and comes with just the right amount of herbs and spices – there are no additives, preservatives or sugar – (have you seen how many tablespoons of sugar are contained in a jar of curry cook in sauce!), are totally gluten free and suitable for vegans.
There is a shopping list on the back – all readily available in Mercadona which was an important point and a easy to follow cooking guide to make the dish. In fact, it´s so easy even a child could make it. When they developed the first prototype they asked Nilam´s 10 year old son Josh to follow the instructions to ensure it really was simple. They made a few tweaks and now plan to conquer the culinary taste buds of Spain. Remember the 1980´s film “Baby Boom” starring Diane Keaton who started up an organic baby food company in her kitchen as she couldn´t find anything suitable and it went global – well this could well follow the same way. Veena is so passionate and totally focused on the project that she gave up a successful full time career as a television producer/director – she trained as a journalist and made documentaries for BBC1 and radio 4 & 5.
