There is mixed reaction to the story that Benidorm is out of control – obviously depending on who you talk to! Following the publication of "that picture" in the Spanish press the Town Hall have announced that they are looking to introduce some kind of by-law to curb this excess and lewd behavior in public. The beach front bars are very popular and often gain a reputation of attracting rowdy behaviour - most days you will see people spilling out onto the road but they do employ staff to control them.
However, some businessmen claim that it is not an issue and nowhere like the problems experienced in Magalf therefore not comparable. But the Town Hall are obviously worried that the image will tarnish the reputation of the resort and put many off, in particular familes therefore taking action. The resort has spent many years trying to improved the perceived image of Benidorm, which is often featured in the British press in a negative light – usually by those that haven´t actually been here!
But even within the council there is mixed reactions. Gema Amor, Councillor for Tourism stated that it will damage Benidorm´s reputation whereas a spokesperson for the PSOE claims that this was an isolated incidence ... he obviously doesn´t go down Calle Gerona very often then!
Bar managers are obviously worried that it may affect their businesses as Benidorm is renowned as a popular Stag and Hen destination, who flock here to take advantage of the cheap booze and free entertainment. I don´t think anyone really minds them enjoying themselves, but there is a limit to what they should be doing in public. Behind closed doors is fine but when families with children or older people are in full view of often questionable behavior I agree that something should be done.
We will await the recommendations – lets just hope it doesn´t go the same way as the mobility scooter bylaw. In essence a good idea that under 55´s can not hire them unless they can prove that they need them – but walking around the Rincon, the pavements are still full of youngsters riding them like bumper cars at the fairground!
