The letter “Q” is the name of the new show - but what does it make you think of?
Q from James Bond, who comes up with all the weapons and gadgets, Queen – as in Her Royal Highness or perhaps the British rock band? Well you´ll be correct on all counts as Artistic Director David Moore at Benidorm Palace told me this week, who I met up ahead of the new show, which will hit the stage at the beginning of May.
Once again David has managed to reinvent and create something totally unique. The music of Queen will get the show on the road, with the opening song “We will Rock You”. It is all very fast paced and tongue in cheek – almost to the point of naughty! Another classic - Bohemian Rhapsody will signal the overhead arrival of a new ribbon act, performed by Keeva, an Irish trained ballerina who went to an acrobatic academy in Berlin to learn the incredible skill.
David Climent will wow the audience with the first of a trove of incredible new illusions that will leave you spellbound. Classic Spanish flamenco down the famous Las Ramblas will see out the first half of the show, with the live band playing them out.
Part two opens with a tribute Barcelona, with cutting edge 3D images of Freddie Mercury projected as a backdrop while Freya sings live simultaneously.
A laser shootout with 16 James Bond girls will introduce the 007 theme “ On Her Majesty´s Secret Service” and see the crown safely under guard in a laser vault, the attempted theft and reappearance incorporated in another amazing illusion. “Gold Finger” will aptly signal the arrival of the gold strong men – still one of the most popular acts with the audience. The final segment is the showstopper – with giant Q logos and plenty of pink feathers. The emphasis with the new show is on projection of special effects and flying objects – in fact part of the upstairs had to be demolished to accommodate them!
The costumes have been in the making for many months and each girl’s outfit is precisely made to measure and numbered. The ostrich feathers are sourced from France, Belgium and South Africa then dyed to order – this years predominant colour is bright pink and black. A prototype is made up to count the exact number of feathers required for each costume, understandable when you learn that a single one can cost up to 12€!
Looks like it will once again be a great innovative production incorporating many new concepts. The dancers have been in rehearsals for the last 6 weeks and I was tired just watching them go over and over the routine for just one dance. It is certainly a place that you should make a point of going to when visiting Benidorm if you want a briiliant night out.
