The Fallas are a traditional Valencian celebration in honour of St Joseph. The term "falles" refers to both the celebration and the monuments created during this time. The biggest and best celebrations occur in Valencia, the birthplace but many towns in the Valencian community have there own parties. These photographs show the amazing fallas createdin Valencia  last year..... many stood at more than 20 metres in height !

Today marks the end of the Fallas, a traditional fiesta in the Valencian community - and tonight they will all be burnt. It is also Spanish Fathers Day here and officially a Bank Holiday, but many shops have been open. The restaurants have certainly been pretty busy over the lunchtime period, which is when most families eat their main meal of the day.

Despite the rather adverse weather conditions, last nights burning of the fallas still took place in Benidorm. However, it wasn´t until the very last few minutes that the “bomberos” gave the thumbs up. Strong winds throughout the day bought uncertainty as to whether it would be too dangerous to go ahead – but thankfully all 3 went up in smoke at the allotted times.

The ceremony of  the "Crema" burning of the fallas at the Rincon de Loix was looked down upon by the lights of Vicentes pubs, Subway and Burger King.  As the Bomberos (fire engine) truck approached, the crowds started to swell, in anticipation of the final act. The local police tried to push the crowds back away from the display telling spectators they will get hot and wet but to no availe.

The Benidorm Fallas went up in smoke last night to the delight of spectators – but bewilderment of holidaymakers! Although a long established tradition, many are still aghast that so much effort and money is put into building these beautiful structures, which are only on display for 4 days.

Last night the Valencian region went up in smoke... literally, as the Fallas were lit!It was the grand finale and climax which marked the end of the 5 day fiesta. A years worth of hard work was reduced to a pile of ash in minutes - its amazing how quickly they burn.I travelled up to Valencia - the home of the Fallas.

If you had an aerial view over the Valencian community at midnight tonight you´d think that there was some kind of forest fire. But no, the beautiful fallas go up in smoke tonight. It must seem bizarre to the Brits to watch these beautifully crafted models, which cost thousands of euros to construct and decorate being burnt.

You may well have heard the term ‘Las Fallas’ here in Benidorm and wondered what it is. Well it's an annual 5 day celebration marked in the province of Valencia between March 15-19, with the grand finale on the night of the 19th – which is a bank holiday here. The focus for many is the creation and destruction of the "ninots", which are HUGE paper-mache models. Every year Benidorm has three; In the Rincon, at the Plaza Triangular and in the Old Town - the themes are varied and satirical, reminiscent of the 80's British comedy Spitting Image or more recently Newzoids, where many of the models are caricatures poking fun at Spanish politicians and celebrities.

Benidorm is in full party mode this week with not one but two major events taking place – St Patrick’s Day, predominantly for the Brits and the Fallas. Both are fantastic but culturally miles apart and if you can, then try and get to see both.The green day has even made it onto the official Benidorm Town Hall fiesta calendar this year, proving what an important (economic) event it is!

It´s fiesta time again..... a month doesn´t seem to pass without there being some kind of celebration here. This time as well as being St Patrick´s weekend for the Brits, which has been well supported by the local bars, it is Spain´s most noisiest festival - Las Fallas.The various penya´s spend almost an entire year designing and building the beautifully crafted effigies.

The traditional San Juan fiestas took place across Spain – and last night, the eve of San Juan, many headed to the beaches to celebrate as is customary. Benidorm, La Cala and Albir were packed with people, partying into the early hours. Up in Alicante the streets were adorned with hogueras – monuments like they have during Fallas time in March, which were burnt on the streets.
